Meridian running back John Murphy has been voted the Football Athlete of the Week, sponsored by Aaron Dickson of Rice Insurance, in an online poll.

Murphy received 43.4 percent (169 votes) of the 389 votes cast at TheBellinghamHerald.com/sports, beating out Blaine’s Tucker Morgan and Nooksack Valley’s Tyler Perry.

Murphy, a sophomore, rushed for 196 yards and three touchdowns on 12 carries in Meridian’s 32-7 Class 1A Northwest District playoff victory at Coupeville on Nov. 5. Two of his TD runs covered 66 and 47 yards.

“John had a great game,” Meridian coach Bob Ames said. “Just a great, great game for us. I was real happy for him.”
