Very sad news from Sports Illustrated that EOU wide receiver died Sunday morning following a head injury suffered during Saturday’s spring game.
A football player from Missoula, Mont., has died of a head injury suffered during Eastern Oregon’s spring football game, school officials said.
Dylan Steigers, 21, took a blow to the head late in Saturday’s scrimmage, and died Sunday at a Boise hospital, spokesman Tim Seydel said.
“It’s hard to describe the emotions we all feel about losing Dylan,” said Eastern Oregon president Bob Davis. “I sat with Dylan’s family during the scrimmage, had a chance to connect with them. Dylan is an exceptional young man who loved to play football, and he had a bright future ahead of him. This is a loss we will feel for a very long time.”
Steigers walked off the field after the collision, but later vomited on the sidelines, a sign of a concussion.
The trainer called 911 and Steigers was taken to Grand Ronde Hospital and later flown to Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center in Boise, school officials said. Doctors said he suffered an acute subdural hematoma as a result of the head injury.

Beginning a couple weeks ago, the High School Cover 2 blog has been running a four-part series on the hopeful reemergence of community college football in the state of Washington.
High School Cover 2 has been touting the reemergence of Junior College football in this state for the last couple of months. We first interviewed Kory Hill, Executive Director, and Brian Moylan, Director of Football Operations, of the fledgling Northwest Community College Football League (NWCCFL) at the end of February. Intrigued by what we learned in that interview, we dared to dream about the possibilities. Our excitement led us to speculate about the benefits of the return of Junior College or, more correctly, Community College football and the increased opportunities for young men in this state to continue playing the sport they love. Additionally, their eagerness to play would benefit them in other ways. Before they could play, for example, they would need to take classes and maintain a pre-determined grade point average. Furthering one’s education is never a bad thing.
The Tacoma News Tribune preps blog offers a preview of Friday’s WIAA Rep Assembly. Items up for consideration include rejiggering classifications by combining 1B & 2B, sanctioning boys and girls lacrosse, and a running block in basketball games where one team is ahead by 40 points or more in the second half.
Here’s a brief clip of Skyline’s Kasen Williams, arguably the #1 national receiver recruit in the class of 2011, winning the high jump at the Eason Invitational this past weekend. This was his third and winning attempt at 6′ 8″.
Obviously, the video quality is wanting, taken from a iPhone about 30 yards away. But Williams looks every bit the part of the elite, national level athlete—big, fast, and extremely athletic.
Now I’m not personally a huge basketball fan, but I love corndogs, tater tots and refreshing beverage. That’s where National Corndog Day comes in. For the uninitiated, NCD is…
For those of you who may be first timers at this grand event, let us describe it as the happiest day of basketball and meats on sticks that you’ll ever have. National Corndog Day coincides with the Saturday of the final 32 teams in NCAA basketball tournament (this year it’s March 20th). This Saturday is the only day all year that one can watch a quadruple-header of college basketball games (that’s a good 7-8 hours of college hoops) from start to finish without having to change the channel. NCD officially starts with the tip-off of the first game – 10 am Pacific/1 pm Eastern. To help pass the time, have fun with our friends, and to celebrate being blessed with such a thing as a college basketball tournament, we eat Corndogs.! Lots of Corndogs…
I first heard of NCD in college at Willamette, through one of my close friends who was a high-school classmate of the NCD founders. Since its humble beginnings in some Corvallis rec room, NCD has grown to a nationwide and international bread-battered bacchanal of basketball and gastric excess, sponsored by Foster Farms, Pabst and Jones Soda Co.
Be sure to check out the posters of yesteryear. My personal favorite is “The Scarfer” from 2001. I also made a go at my own poster.
LAKEWOOD—James Powell, a Clover Park High School senior and football player, was selected as an Old Spice Red Zone Player of the Year. Powell, 17, is the son of James and Susie Powell. Over 1,500 football players from more than 4,500 high schools were nominated for one of 50 spots.
Throughout the 2009 football season, participating high school coaches selected a player of the week from their team. At the end of the season, a player of the year from each team was submitted to the Red Zone football committee who chose the 50 national winners. The program, which was launched in 2001, is designed to recognize those football players who demonstrate not only outstanding athletic ability, but also strong leadership and integrity.
“I nominated James for this award because he demonstrates the core components of Clover Park Warrior football,” said Jon Randall, head coach. “He is a hard worker, team player and a leader. I’m very proud of him.”
In addition to being featured in a full-page advertisement in USA Today, Powell received a plaque, certificate and Red Zone fleece jacket.
