1986 Game #4:Â Meridian 28, Blaine 22 (2 OT)–Meeting #1
Week 4 of the 1986 season found Meridian at Blaine for the first of two meetings between the two schools. The Trojans scored first on a 4-yard Lance Scott TD run and the Borderites answered on a 66-yard pass play, then capitalized on a Trojan offside penalty on the conversion attempt and successfully “went for 2” for an 8-7 first quarter lead. The Borderites tacked on another score in the 2nd quarter but missed the PAT to lead 14-7 at the half.
The Trojans tied the game in the 3rd quarter on their 2nd possession on a 2-yard Art Mayshack run. The Borderites took the lead late in the 4th quarter and compounded the drama with another successful 2-pt. conversion for a 22-14 lead. The Trojans then began a pounding 60-yard drive, with no play over 9 yards, and bled the clock down under a minute and punctuated the drive with a play-action, 2-yard touchdown toss from Scott to senior TE Kirk Wilcox. Forced to go for 2 to tie the game, Scott dove for the tying points on a sprintout to the left.
Tied at 22, the Kansas tie-breaker saw the Trojans suffer an interception on their first possession, but benefited from a blown snap on the Borderites winning FG attempt. The Borderites began the second extra frame surrendering the ball on downs. The Trojans wasted no time capitalizing– two Travis Bass runs put the Trojans 2nd and 4 at the 8-yard line. Frank Castaneda, running behind the block of Bass, scampered in for the winning score, ending the Trojans longest winning game in school history. For the game, the defense allowed just 3 completions in 14 attempts, and a mere 31 yards rushing on 35 attempts, while the offensive line and backs ran up 221 yards, 3 touchdowns, and 14 first downs on 53 rushes. Coincidentally, the game would mark the first of two consecutive multiple-overtime games for the Trojans, as their Week 5 contest with Lynden would go to three extra periods.
