1986 Game #9: Meridian 21, Blaine 19 (Meeting #2)
The 1986 WCL season was one of the most competitive and close races in the history of the league. Perennial powers Lynden and Meridian would be left out of the playoffs, with L.C. and Mt. Baker earning the league’s spots to state. The Trojans were a penalty on a kick-off return for a touchdown from splitting the season series with the Lyncs and had earned a split with Mt. Baker by virtue of their Week 8 defeat of the Mountaineers. The Borderites would come into the season finale with the Trojans looking for a split after the Trojans defeated Blaine in double overtime in the first meeting. This week 9 contest also marked the Trojans last “home” game at Civic Field before taking to the field in the new stadium to start the 87 season.
The Trojans would have to overcome an embarrassing 6 lost fumbles in this wet contest, falling behind to Blaine 7-0 before junior Art Mayshack tied the game on a 6-yard run late in the second quarter. The Trojans would take the lead late in the third quarter with seniors Lance Scott and Rich Tew hooking up for a 35-yard touchdown. Down 14-7, the Borderites capitalized on a Trojan fumble to score but missed the PAT. Leading 14-13, the Trojans blocked a Blaine punt on their next defensive series, setting up Mayshack’s second score of the game, a 5-yard run to add to his total of 157 for the game. The game Borderites were able to score a final touchdown with fewer than 30 seconds in the game, but trailing 21-19, were forced to go for 2 and were stopped by the Trojan D. Bill Palmberg recovered the ensuing onside kick attempt for the Trojans who used won kneeldown to clinch the victory and a winning season. On the night, the Trojan secondary held the Borderites to just 7 completions in 19 attempts and intercepted 3 passes: 2 by Scott and one by Willard Pat in the 4th quarter. The Trojans were highly effective on offense (when not giving the ball away) with Scott completing 6 of his 7 passes and the running attack piling up 220 yards on 50 attempts while earning 17 first downs to just 8 for Blaine.
